about

By Eryc Eyl(Denver Post):

In six years of playing high energy shows and releasing hard-hitting tracks, the affiliation known as American Trash Republic — with members in Denver and LA — has never quite gotten its due in Denver. Our fair city has become increasingly known for the fertility of its hip-hop scene, but much of the attention (ours included) has focused on so-called conscious hip-hop, the subgenre that sets out to raise awareness of social issues. To say that ATR doesn’t fit that mold is to criminally understate what the group is all about.

With songs that glorify violence and drugs, objectify women and celebrate the thug life, American Trash Republic’s messages are hardly the socially responsible hip-hop that NPR listeners seek. In fact, ATR-affiliated rappers appear to embody everything for which the genre has been vilified over the past 20 years or so.

On the other hand, the crew has consistently delivered rock-oriented beats that bang, lyrics that crackle and flow that grabs you by the throat, ever since its 2005 debut, “How Dying Saved My Life.” ATR has released solo records from MCs like Concept Oner, Death Before Dishonor and SP Double, as well as mix tapes under both the ATR name and Mile Hicons (a somewhat distinct project led by Cody Beastly (a.k.a. Cody Wamsley) and Skull Bludgeon (known to his mama as Elijah Skinner), all for free.

The latest American Trash Republic release is “Mile Hicons Mixtape Volume 2,” and centers around Wamsley and Skinner’s hard-hitting delivery, as well as deft cuts from DJ Bizerkk and longtime ATR collaborator DJ Just. Sure, the lyrics are occasionally sophomoric, but the passion in the voices and the bass in the beats are undeniable.

If you like what you’re hearing, make sure to pop over to American Trash Republic’s Bandcamp page for the rest of “Mile Hicons Volume 2,” as well as several other 100% free downloads from the ATR family.
